Title:
Central mechanisms underlying abnormal regulation of arterial pressure

Abstract:
Despite the current availability of an impressive antihypertensive pharmacology armoury, the problem of high blood pressure persists in a significant proportion of patients on antihypertensive therapy. Essential hypertension is accepted as a complex polygenic trait with underlying genetic components, however, its mechanisms remain unknown. Our supposition is that primary hypertension involves activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Since the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) is a pivotal region for regulating the set-point of arterial pressure, we proposed a role for it in the development of neurogenic hypertension.
This presentation relates our research of causative genes of neurogenic hypertension within the NTS of hypertensive rats (SHR) and proposes possible cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of hypertension.
