A short History of the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences

June 1976

(Showa 51)

The Graduate School of Humanities and Science (Doctoral program) was established. The program commenced with two graduate divisions, Comparative Culture, and Human Development.

April 1977

(Showa 52)

The division of Human Environment was added.

April 1978

(Showa 53)

A department in Culture and Science Studies was added to the graduate division of Comparative Culture, and a department in Foundations for Environmental Studies was added to the division of Human Environment.

April 1993

(Heisei 5)

A department in Women Studies was added to the division of Human Development.

April 1995

(Heisei 7)

A department in Intercultural Communication was added to the division of Comparative Culture.

April 1997

(Heisei 9)

Faculty of Letters and Education, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Home Economics (Master's program) were abolished. Three Faculties of Master's program and the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences were consolidated and re organized into Master's program and Doctoral program of the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences. The School of Integrated Sciences was established.

April 1998

(Heisei 10)

Division of Human Development and Human Environment in Doctoral programs were reorganized respectively into the School of Human Developmental Sciences and the School of Human Environmental Science.

April 1999

(Heisei 11)

The Comparative Culture (Doctoral program) was divided into the School of Comparative Study of Societies and Cultures, and the School of Japanese Studies in a Global Perspective. As a result, the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences has 6 Master's programs and 5 Doctoral programs.

April 2007

(Heisei 17)

The division of Interdisciplinary Gender Studies was added to the doctoral program.

April 2006

(Heisei 18)

The division of Gender and Social Sciences was incorporated into the master's program.

April 2007

(Heisei 19)

The Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences was reorganized. The previous seven graduate divisions of the master's program were consolidated into five divisions, and the previous sic divisions of the doctoral program were also consolidated into five divisions, each corresponding to the divisions in the master's program.

April 2016

(Heisei 28)

The division of Cooperative Major in Human Centered Engineering was added to the master's program and the doctoral program.
