Essential Ethics for Global Leaders to begin on December 5, 2014

“Essential Ethics for Global Leaders” will be offered.
Prof. Yasushi Ishida in Global Human Resource Development Center will be in charge of this lecture.
This lecture is designed as one of the “Doctoral Program Liberal Arts” for “Minor Course of Science and Technology for Global Leaders”. The lecture is open to all master’s & doctoral students who want to be active in the international community no matter which major/minor course they belong to. The lecture will be conducted in English.

Lecture Objectives

Ethics is not an issue that we quite often talk about. But the issue does have much importance to us. We are surrounded by the type of issues that have significant ethical impacts on us; those engaged in science and technology are no exception. The question of whether scientific technologies or research are socially acceptable requires sound ethical reflection. In fact, the complexity of modern sciences and the rapid progress in research and technological development pose a lot of ethical questions. For instance, advanced medical technologies pose a question of when we should stop medical treatment for a patient (e.g., “the problem of euthanasia”), or of how much we are allowed to apply cloning technologies to human beings.
This course will take a close look at the ethical significance found in modern cutting-edge technologies and the ethical (moral) challenges posed by them. Students are expected to learn ethically important concepts and master the ways of thinking that would be useful in discussing modern sciences and technological developments.
As a final assessment, students are to make a presentation on modern scientific technologies and the ethical problems that can be found in the issues.
