The Division of Comparative Literature and Cultures

Greetings from the Dean

The subjects explored under the Division of Comparative Studies of Societies and Cultures straddle an extensive array of fields, including societies, cultures, languages and the arts. While some disciplines focus on Japan, others target various countries and regions around the world. Furthermore, while emphasizing the importance of continuing scholarship on the long history of humankind, the division also keeps an eye on changes in modern cultures and societies. As such, our division forms the backbone of humanities scholarship and research at Ochanomizu University. Since our division has an extremely large faculty pool and student body, graduate students here can engage in friendly competition with their fellow researchers and achieve high-level research results while receiving guidance from multiple faculty members having different areas of expertise.

I expect that every one of you who enters the Division of Comparative Studies of Societies and Cultures will take up the rich legacy of past scholarly research available to you here and use it to go beyond the cutting edge.

NAKAMURA Toshinao,
Dean of Division of Comparative Studies of Societies and Cultures
