Features

1. Emphasis on fundamental skills needed to respond flexibly to changes in society

This program prepares postdoctoral students with globally applicable fundamental skills through the five-year curriculum. The main subjects – physics, mathematics, and computer science – are taught in English. Other subjects include English language in the field of science and expression, career education, leadership training, and a doctoral program of liberal arts (philosophy, ethics, etc.).

2. Introduction of Project Based Team Study (PBTS)

This program introduces PBTS, a method developed from PBL (Project Based Learning), in which students conduct team research instead of group study. Students from different fields and with diverse backgrounds form a project team and implement their own research. They find and solve multidisciplinary issues through collaboration between industry, educational institutions, and the administration. Their goal is to coauthor a supplementary doctoral dissertation on the project.

3. Strict achievement assessment and development/provision of learning support systems

This program strictly and precisely assesses achievement by maintaining functional strict GPA and several types of qualifying exams (QEs) based on rubric assessment. To realize this objective, this program develops three learning support systems: (1) graduate school learning assessment, (2) study portfolio, and (3) study commons. After this program is completed, these systems will be available for other universities to use for free.

4. Collaboration between industry, educational institutions, and the administration

This program invites people from industry, educational institutions, and the administration to act as organizers and advisory board members. With the close cooperation between different fields, the university becomes the hub and carries out the degree program to promote opportunities for postdoctoral students to advance into society.

5. Laboratory rotations

This program carries out laboratory rotation between prominent affiliated institutes in the fields of industry, educational institutions, and the administration.
