主題と目標

 This course provides a broad introduction to major philosophical topics. The course is open to students from any disciplines, who hope to:
(1) understand some of the most fundamental philosophical issues (which include freedom, truth, and moral rightness /wrongness)
(2) be able to explain these issues in very simple everyday language; and
(3) apply philosophical ways of thinking (reasoning) on every-day issues;
“Philosophy” is considered to be quite an old topic or subject – and most likely difficult, unfortunately. It is true that philosophical questions have been discussed in rather complex terms by philosophers since many years ago, for example, by Aristotle in the ancient Greek period. But these questions must also be relevant to our everyday lives. That is, we are surrounded by a number of philosophical issues, though we may not always discuss their philosophical aspects; philosophical issues are basically our everyday issues.
Among many everyday/ philosophical issues, in this course we will pick up about 6 to 7 philosophically important topics. We will discuss them – their in-depth meanings, their philosophical significances, and their relevance to our lives. The goal is to explain your understanding and insights in the terms which anybody can understand. That would help you obtain some good “philosophical perspectives”; with the perspectives you will be able to see the world in quite an interesting way.
********************
As a final assessment, students are expected to make a presentation on one of the topics discussed in class. By the end of the course, students will have improved their listening comprehension skills and be able to present their own opinions in a coherent and organized manner.
Now let’s explore the world and find your own philosophical “telescope” to see the world differently.
