Exploration & Dialogue: Education for Women as Leaders

On the occasion of the adoption of
gInitiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schoolsh in 2005

GO, Mitiko
President, Ochanomizu University
  President M. Go
We are happy to announce that both of the two graduate school programs that Ochanomizu University applied for in 2005 have been approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
These are a humanities and social science program, gExploration • Dialogue: Education for Women as Leaders,h and a science program, gThe Training Program in Bioinformatics for Women Graduate Students.h
The basic principles of the humanities and social science program are gexplorationh in the sense that we explore our expertise and deepen our understanding of human beings, and gdialogueh in the sense that we seek dialogues between different academic fields, between nations and between cultures.  To that end, we have designed this program essentially in the way in which we have expanded Japanese Studies from the traditional framework to an interdisciplinary study.  Thus expanded, the main characteristics of the program are gOverseas Joint Educational Program,h enhancement of the  Multisupervisor System and practical guidance for studentsf doctoral dissertation writing process.  The science program is aimed at fostering capable women resources in such leading-edge research areas as bioinformatics.  The foremost characteristic of this program is that it is so designed that graduate students not only from conventional life sciences or biosciences but also from any other science field can master the methodology of bioinformatics, deepening the understanding of their own expertise.  To accommodate the program, we plan to develop our existing lectures, seminars and supervisor system so that we can offer courses in cutting-edge life science areas and implement an internship program in cooperating institutions.
This academic institution has produced many outstanding women researchers and scholars during this time period.  The most notable feature of our graduate school is that the humanities and social science fields and the science fields constitute one single graduate school.  The two programs that are applied for from each of these different fields of study have both been adopted; we take pride in the fact that we have received a validation for our teaching philosophy, which aims at deepening studentsf expertise and at the same time pursuing academic development as well as social contribution with a new perspective for the coming generations.
Our programs were among 35 cases in the humanities and social science fields and 43 MEXT-approved programs cases in the science fields, respectively.  We feel particularly honored that two out of 97 adopted cases, including ones in the field of health care, were applied for by our graduate school.  We have also been told that only Ochanomizu University applied for more than one program, all of which have been adopted.  We understand that our graduate school is expected to undertake the social responsibility to educate our students from both fields to be future female leaders; we certainly realize the gravity of our mission.
During my administration our institution has also won approval for well coordinating, our academic support systems for female researchers and scholars.  By means of the two graduate teaching programs that have been adopted this time, we intend, with a view to the changing social situation, to promote further our project to foster female leaders with an interdisciplinary and international perspective as well as with sophisticated expertise.
We wish you will continue to keep an eye, in a critical but supportive manner, on Ochanomizu Universityfs enthusiasm for graduate school education and our future achievements.
